Our 3rd Grade Garden!

We've check on our AMAZING garden throughout the year and have some pretty great photos of our 3rd Grade Garden! The kids have done great checking in on our garden during STEAM school, recess, after school, and other random times during the school day when we've had a quick second!

As of today, we have 7 pea pods, 6 (and counting) pumpkins coming in, and 5 sunflower plants that pass up almost every single kiddo!

This is where we started. Several milk cartons lined up in the window sill of our classroom with Swiss Chard, Broccoli, and Purple Snap Peas. (We planted the sunflowers and pumpkins directly in the ground later).

Plant Observations

Last week, we planted some dandelion seeds we found outside. This week, one of the kids brought in some seeds she found over the weekend that look almost like beans. I have no clue what kind they are, but we planted them to see what would happen! We started a plant observation book to see what the plants look like each day and if they will grow or not.

Everyday this week the kids had to write the date and record their observations of the seeds by writing a sentence and drawing a picture.

Plant Parts

This week in science we talked about parts of a plant. Monday, we watched our Parts of a Plant BrainPop.

Tuesday, we did a parts of a plant labeling activity in our science journals. The kids cut out 6 different words, and we read them one at a time as a group. The kids had to decide where the words went on their paper and which word we did not need.

Wednesday, we made a plant parts flip book. The kids folded and cut their papers to have 4 flaps, wrote words on each flap, then built a flower behind the flaps to show each different part of the plant as you raise each flap.

Friday, the kids dissected flowers and sorted the parts onto different mats at their tables. After sorting the different parts, we looked at a flower petal and leaf underneath a microscope and saw the cells that make up those parts of the plant!
