What an AMAZING back to school Porch Party! Thank you to everyone who was able to come to Porch Party last night! 4th Grade was so excited to see everyone here and glad that you were able to make it around to meet all of us!
This week's snapshot has been added to the Weekly Snapshots page. Remember to use the password you received on your back to school brochure to access the Weekly Snapshots page.
You will also find a links to some of the different pages that were on your child's desk during Porch Party. Please make sure you sign up for the Remind for ALL OF YOUR CHILD'S TEACHERS. Different teachers will send different information about their specific content area. I will also be sending out any "all grade level" remind messages so we do not bombard you 4 of the same text when we have 4th grade announcements.
As always, if you have any questions, please let me know! Have a great weekend and we can't wait to see everyone back at school on Monday morning!

This
week, we will continue our unit on addition and subtraction with a focus on strategies
and problem solving. We will continue to look at how model drawing (strip
diagrams and number lines) helps us to solve problems. We will also review
compatible numbers being numbers that get along well with each other and are
easy to work with mentally. For our purposes, we will be focusing on numbers
that give a sum or difference that is a multiple of 10 or 5.
Some of the areas we will be focusing
on this week are:
·
Solving addition and subtraction problems using the
standard algorithm within 1,000
·
Estimating sums and differences (by rounding the
numbers before solving)
·
Applying multiple ways of solving addition and
subtraction
We will be representing these skills in our
math notebooks. Math notebooks can go home at any time for extra practice and
studying! Please be sure to return math notebooks to school each day so that we
may continue to take notes and work through examples in them.
We have been practicing multiplication
facts through game play and during our morning work each day in class. We will
soon begin reviewing multiplying 0s through 12s up to 12 in preparation for our
multiplication fluency unit that starts in a few weeks.
MATH RESOURCES
FOR PRACTICE
Math Playground - Thinking Blocks – We will use this in class during whole group
instruction to look at different types of strip diagrams and how to set them
up. During at home practice, students can go through specific operations, or
set it to random and fill in each part of the strip diagram as practice!
Math Games - Adding up to 1,000 – Solve addition problems by adding two numbers
together up to 1,000. Problems are written in standard algorithm. Use the scratch
pad to help solve problems!
Math Games - Complete the Subtraction Sentence – Use what you know about minuends, subtrahends and
differences to solve different subtraction sentences. Use the scratch pad to
help solve problems!
Soft Schools - Compatible Numbers Quiz – Test your compatible numbers knowledge with this
quiz! Remember, compatible numbers require us to round before solving
sometimes! This quiz has some large digit problems, but with compatible
numbers, they are much easier to solve mentally.
Soft Schools - Math Lines Game – Use your
knowledge of compatible numbers to match numbers that add up to make 10.
Destroy balls by forming pairs that add up to 10 and earn points!
These links can be
accessed on our Addition
and Subtraction Symbaloo here.
Resources will be added as we continue through our Addition and Subtraction
unit.

We will continue looking at the sink or float ability of different
objects. We will continue using the terms “density” as it related to an objects
ability to sink or float, and “buoyancy” as it relates to an objects ability to
float. We will take our first look at STEAM instigations this week with
building foil boats that are able to hold the greatest capacity. This past
week, we looked at the capacity of a plastic cup “lifeboat” that will be the
perfect preparation for out STEAM investigation!
Some of the areas we
will be focusing on this week are:
●
Collecting, recording, and analyzing information
gathered and organized
●
The importance of accurate measurements
●
Whether or not the size and material of an object
determines if it will sink or float
BrainPOP JR - Sink or Float – Annie and Moby investigate different items that sink
and float in this video from BrainPOP Jr. After the video, play the game that
allows you to drag different objects into the ocean to see if they will sink or
float.
Sesame Street - Sink or Float – Try to collect as many items as possible in the
treasure chest by clicking the items that will sink, rather than the items that
will float.
Discovery Education - Dive Right In – In this lab from Discovery Education, you will act
as a marine engineer! Test different shapes and materials that may make a
submarine sink or float in fresh and salt water. As you investigate, your
results are recorded in order to compare your data! To log into Discovery
Education, go through your Ready Hub account or click here and log in with your student ID and password.

THIS WEEK IN MATH:
This
week, we will continue our unit on addition and subtraction with a focus on
regroup. We will be looking at subtracting across zeros. We will also be
looking more at how model drawing (strip diagrams and number lines) helps us to
solve problems.
Some of the areas we will be focusing
on this week are:
·
Estimating sums and differences
·
Representing addition and subtraction using base
ten blocks, strip diagrams, and number lines
·
Using different strategies to add and subtract
We will be representing these skills in our
math notebooks. Math notebooks can go home at any time for extra practice and
studying! Please be sure to return math notebooks to school each day so that we
may continue to take notes and work through examples in them.
