 THIS WEEK IN MATH:

We will continue our STEP UP TO 4TH GRADE Unit, our last unit of 3rd Grade. Students will be reviewing concepts that students typically struggle with, such as interpreting word problems and measurement skills.
 Some of the areas we will be focusing on this week are:
·         2 Digit by 2 Digit Multiplication

MATH RESOURCES FOR PRACTICE

Khan Academy - 2 Digit by 2 Digit Multiplication – This video on 2 digit by 2 digit multiplication from Khan Academy is a good way to see how to multiply 2 digit by 2 digit numbers.
Math Playground - 2 Digit by 2 Digit Multiplication – Practice 2 digit by 2 digit multiplication on Math Playground using the standard algorithm method. You can also view the area model on our class blog page here.
Soft Schools - Learning Multiplication – Playing on Level 2 of the Learning Multiplication game will give students 2 digit by 2 digit multiplication problems. Level 1 would be a good review of 2 digit by 1 digit multiplication problems. Level 3 is a mixed practice that includes numbers through the hundreds place.
Education Galaxy – As students log into their accounts on Education Galaxy, they can choose the option to go up 1 level and work through 4th grade materials. In the purple section titled “My Study Plan”, there are several different topics to practice. The TEKS accompany these skills.

These links can be accessed on our Step Up to 4th Grade Symbaloo here. As we continue through the unit, more links will be added.

THIS WEEK IN SCIENCE:
In science this week, we will continue our Unit on Organisms and Ecosystems. We continue the unit by discussing food chains and how ecosystems can be effected if there are changes in those food chains or other aspects of the ecosystem. We will be discussing the following this week:
       Predicting how changes in a food chain affect the ecosystem
       Understand how environmental changes affect an environment
       Understand the flow of energy in a food chain

SCIENCE RESOURCES FOR PRACTICE
NASA's Climate Kids - Ecosystems – Read these 10 interesting things about ecosystems that are found all over the world! Navigate through the different activities on the plants and animals page to learn about a slew of other topics!
PBS Kids Plum Landing – Navigate through the different activities on the Plum Landing page of PBS Kids Science page to play games about different ecosystems! The kids have been shown where to find this link to PBS Kids on our class blog page and how to find our embedded Symbaloo.
Desert Ecosystem Game – Still one of my favorite games! The game will cycle through 12 days and show you which plants and animals are still surviving in their ecosystem, which plants and animals are not doing so well, and which plants and animals have perished.
World Biomes – Learn about different types of biomes including the location, plant life, and animal life. Choose from 5 different aquatic biomes and 9 different terrestrial biomes. There are also word searches, crossword puzzles and fill in the word games to print and play.

                                                                                        Week of: May 21, 2018

Dear Parents,

Can you believe we just have 12 more days of school!?! These are going to come up on us quickly! We will not have any more homework in Math, Science or Social Studies for the remainder of the school year. 3rd grade will also be using our after school tutorial time as after school work time instead. This means that students who stay after school these last 3 after school days will be working on incomplete assignments, missing assignments, make up work, corrections or replacement assignments instead of remediation. If your child needs to stay after school to complete any work, please let me know so I can make the proper dismissal changes and inform the office of who will be staying with us after school.

         MATH RESOURCES FOR PRACTICE

Sheppard Software - Decimals - Sheppard Software features decimal games that involve decimal models, relating fractions and decimals, adding and subtracting decimals, comparing and ordering decimals, decimal place value, rounding decimals, decimal patterns, and comparing decimals and fractions (this one if for 6th grade and up).
Math Games - Comparing Decimals – In this comparing game on Math Games.com, students compare different decimals with place values in the tenths and hundredths place. This is good practice for thinking of decimals as parts of a whole and relating them to fractions as we did last week in class.
Study Ladder - Adding and Subtracting Decimals – In this interactive game on Study Ladder, students add and subtract decimals through word problem type problems. This is a 6th Grade level game and is good practice for those who are ready to really step it up!
Math-Play - Decimals - Math-Play has a couple of adding and subtracting decimal games. There is a Soccer themed game, Baseball themed game, Basketball themed game, and board game.

 THIS WEEK IN MATH:
It’s almost time! Can you believe that we will be taking STAAR tests in just 6 school days!? Ours last day of Math Mastery will take place this Monday, May 7. If there is anything that you want you child to continue to practice as we get ready for STAAR, please let me know and I can send you resources either through email or in a packet.
We will continue reviewing skills from the year. Your child will be reviewing all skills from the year that we have covered in preparation for our STAAR test on Monday, May 14. This would be a great time for your child to practice the different math modules on Education Galaxy, as well as review other skills from previous snapshots that have been sent out. These can be found on our blog page at http://msmolixsclass.blogspot.com/p/weekly-snapshots.html

STAAR Review
STAAR Review Jeopardy: We have played Jeopardy in class as a review, and you can play at home! Set up to 16 teams and play with family or friends at home! There are different games to choose from. Each game covers different skills.
You can also click here to see the search list of 3rd grade math STAAR jeopardy games

IXL Math Practice – Has online practice questions for all TEKS in third grade math.
Test Prep Review – Practice Questions over various math objectives
Another great way to continue to review for STAAR is to practice problems like those that are sent home from morning work. Reviewing those problems and seeing where mistakes may have occurred is a great way to practice those skills. Coming up with similar problems would also be very helpful.

THIS WEEK IN SCIENCE:
In science this week, we will continue our Unit on Organisms and Ecosystems. We will continue discussing animals and look at life cycles of animals such as lady bugs. We will also be looking at the ways animals thrive in their environments and ecosystems.
       different soils and their impact on the growth of a plant;
       investigating how plants undergo a series of orderly changes;
       compare soils for their ability to grow plants;
       the certain characteristics of an environment that help organisms survive;
       all of an organism’s needs and how they are met by its habitat;
       describing the physical characteristics of an ecosystem

RESOURCES FOR PRACTICE
NASA's Climate Kids - Plants & Animals – Read these 10 interesting things about ecosystems that are found all over the world! Navigate through the different activities on the plants and animals page to learn about a slew of other topics!
PBS Kids Nature Games – Navigate through the different nature games on PBS Kids. The kids have been shown where to find this link to PBS Kids on our class blog page and how to find our embedded Symbaloo.
