PRACTICE
An enVision MATH practice page will come home this week (most likely Tuesday) that describes place value relationships and gives examples. This page (27 – 28) is for practice only and does not need to come back to school. Once our Pearson accounts are ready, students will be able to watch the Place Value Relationships video for added at home support.

Graded homework begins this week! As per grading in grouping, homework that is turned in late will have 10 points taken off for each day that it is late. Homework that is more than 3 days late may not be accepted.

 THIS WEEK IN MATH:

We will continue looking at place value this week, as well as place value relationships. Place value relationships is a topic that can be a bit of a challenge, and sound confusing. We will be using our envision MATH book and videos this week to help with place value relationships.
Some of the areas we will be focusing on this week are:
·         Compose and decompose numbers up to 100,000 using objects, pictorial models, and expanded notation
·         Represent numbers up to 100,00 using standard form, word form, expanded form and expanded notation
·         compare and order whole numbers up to 100,000 using the symbols (>, <, or =)
·         interpret the value of each place-value position as 10 times the position to the right and as one-tenth of the value of the place to its left

We will be representing these skills in our math notebooks. Math notebooks can go home at any time for extra practice and studying! Please be sure to return math notebooks to school each day so that we may continue to take notes and work through examples in them. Ways to represent numbers in different forms can also be found on our class blog page here.

MATH RESOURCES FOR PRACTICE

ABCya - Base Ten BINGO – This game has your child match a set of base ten blocks with a correct 4 digit number. You can select as many place value to practice at a time as you want up to the thousands place.
Splash Math - Expanded and Word Forms – Practice converting numbers from expanded and word form to standard form.
Sheppard Software - Math Man – I may have played this game for longer than I should have! It’s Pac-Man, but with place value! A digit and its place value is given and you have to find and “eat” the ghost with the correct number. It’s so much fun!
Sheppard Software - Place Value Shapes Shoot – This game is PERFECT for practicing the various ways a number may be represented in short word form (with numbers and words). A number is given and your job is to choose the correct representation. The tricky part is when place value amounts exceed 9!
Sheppard Software - Fruit Splat – Practice converting numbers from expanded form to standard form. There are 3 levels ranging from 2 digit to 2 digit numbers. There are also 3 challenge levels that require regrouping between place values! Play in untimed or timed mode!
These links can be accessed on our Place Value and Money Symbaloo here. As we continue through the unit, more links will be added.

THIS WEEK IN SCIENCE:
We will continue looking at how scientist work and fair testing! We spent Friday setting up for our first investigation of the year and will be conducting it in class on Monday! We will be practicing how to run a fair test by testing different types of paper and their ability to be shot into a trash can. We will also move on to looking at measuring length using our paper meter tapes that were sent home as homework this past week.
Some of the areas we will be focusing on this week are:
How to use simple tools and current technology to measure data
How to design a fair test
        Components of a fair test
How to make measurements with appropriate units
Standard measurement units in the metric system

SCIENCE RESOURCES FOR PRACTICE
Khan Academy - Mass – View video that discusses mass, then practice with questions that compare grams and kilograms! You can also practice different word problems with mass. *When accessing from Symbaloo, click the navy Learner’s, start here button, Math By Grade – 3rd, measurement and data, and then choose mass.
·         Student will be setting up their own accounts for Khan Academy within the upcoming weeks using their school email addresses. This is the same email address they will use to log into our chrome books. If you would like to begin practicing at home, you can have your child create their own account with their school email by clicking this link. The code to join our class is VFQR45RK. Their password will be the same password they use to log on to the computer at school. If you would like this information, please let me know and I will send it home!
Discovery Education - Meter Video – Students will log into their Discovery Education accounts using Ready Hub. This video goes through what a meter is, what we may measure with a meter, and what segments a meter is broken down into.

These links can be accessed on our Scientists Measure Symbaloo here. As we continue through the unit, more links will be added.

Thank you so much for your dedication to helping your child learn!

Happy Camper Summer Reading Logs

Thank you so much for those that have already sent in your Happy Camper Summer Reading Logs!  Please remember that in order for your student to enjoy the ice cream treat on August 30, they must return the Happy Camper Reading Log.  Some students were asking for extra copies today. I will make some extra copies tonight but you can also find a digital copy here as well.  Please turn these in as soon as possible to your homeroom teacher so that we can get you on the ice cream list.

What a great first day of school! We talked about the good characteristics of a mathematician, the good characteristics of a scientist, looked at our class blog, Class Dojo, talked about our first home work assignment for the week, and had some really great classroom discussions!

Creating a graphic organizer in math notebooks to tell about the characteristics of a good mathematician.

Tomorrow we will being our first units in math and science. We will be looking at place value in math, and fair testing in science.

THIS WEEK IN SCIENCE:
We will begin our year in Science by looking at how scientist work! This includes reviewing the scientific method, how to measure different items accurately, and what it means to conduct a fair test.
Some of the areas we will be focusing on this week are:
How to use simple tools and current technology to measure data
How to organize data in a scientific notebook
How to design a fair test
       Components of a fair test

A big part of Science throughout the year will be recording information in our science notebooks. While parts of each science notebook such as graphic organizers, illustrations, and the way each student shows understanding of topics may vary, the setup of each science notebook will be the same. You can see how our science notebooks will be set up for the year on our blog page here.
