Welcome to 3^rd Grade!

Each week, a snapshot of our week in Math and Science will be sent home. This snapshot of the week will include upcoming dates, upcoming due dates for classwork and homework, and what we will be learning in math and science for the upcoming week. There will also be links to different websites with games and information to help with practicing skills at home! These links will all be compiled onto Symbaloo by unit so you will be able to access them easier at home without having to sift through numerous snapshots.

Upcoming Assignment due dates
Friday, August 24	Science Classwork: Scientific Method Quiz
Monday, August 27	Science Homework: Color, cut and glue paper meter tape. These will be used in class Tuesday, August 28. You can see an example of this on our class blog page here
Tuesday, September 4	Science Homework: Show you favorite science topics by decorating the cover of your science notebook! We will be using notebooks in class often, remember to bring them back to school every day until you are finished decorating your cover!

Home practice/ Homework will begin next week. As per grading in grouping, homework that is turned in late will have 10 points taken off for each day that it is late. Homework that is more than 3 days late may not be accepted.

 THIS WEEK IN MATH:

We will begin our year discussing place value! In 3^rd grade, we are looking at different place values from the ones place all the way to the hundred thousands place. The magnet section will also be looking at the millions place.

 Some of the areas we will be focusing on this week are:

·         Place value of whole numbers up to the 100,000s place

·         Describe the place value relationship found in the base-10 place value system

·         Compose and decompose numbers up to 100,000 using objects, pictorial models, and expanded notation

·         Represent numbers up to 100,00 using standard form, word form, expanded form and expanded notation

We will be representing these skills in our math notebooks. Math notebooks can go home at any time for extra practice and studying! Please be sure to return math notebooks to school each day so that we may continue to take notes and work through examples in them. Ways to represent numbers in different forms can also be found on our class blog page here.

MATH RESOURCES FOR PRACTICE

ABCya - Place Value Hockey – Choose a level (1, 2 or 3), decide if you are going to find the place value or make a number based on the word form, and get started! Get 5 in a row correct and take a penalty shot

Math-Play - Place Value Games – Choose from 6 different place value games on Math-Play’s Place Value page. There are football, pirate and racing themed games.

Soft Schools - Teaching Place Value – Choose a level, choose the number of problems you want to answer, and START! Look at the red, underlined digit in each number and type in the value of that digit. How many can you get right?

Mr. Nussbaum - Place Value Pirates – Use your place value skills to dispatch of the wretched pirate Sir Francis Place Value and his horrible band of place value pirates! Read the prompt on the top of each page and click the pirate with the number that matched the prompt.

ABCya - Base Ten Fun – Practice base ten by building number using digits and base ten blocks.

THIS WEEK IN SCIENCE:

We will begin our year in Science by looking at how scientist work! This includes reviewing the scientific method, how to measure different items accurately, and what it means to conduct a fair test.

Some of the areas we will be focusing on this week are:

●       How to use simple tools and current technology to measure data

●       How to organize data in a scientific notebook

●       How to design a fair test

●       Components of a fair test

A big part of Science throughout the year will be recording information in our science notebooks. While parts of each science notebook such as graphic organizers, illustrations, and the way each student shows understanding of topics may vary, the setup of each science notebook will be the same. SCIENCE RESOURCES FOR PRACTICE

BrainPOP Jr - Scientific Method – View this video about the Scientific Method. Once you finish, you can take the quizzes or play the game! In the Scientific Method game, put the cards that describe each step of the scientific method in order. You can also have fun by doing the string activity at home! You can also watch the BrainPOP Scientific Method for older kids here

BrainPOP - Cool Science Careers – See what it’s like to be a scientists in this game from BrainPOP! Choose between 4 different careers and test your scientific, deductive, and analytical skills. This game is for grades 3-5 and 5-8. Some of the questions may be geared more toward the 5-8 side, but from what I have played, it’s fun!

BrainPOP - The Meaning of The Beep: Scientific Method – Tim broke Moby’s language chip, and now Moby’s robot is missing some words! Can you use contect clues to fill in the blanks? Practice the scientific method as well as your vocabulary skills while finding synonyms for each of the scientific method steps.

Meter Tape Homework

Our homework for the first week of school is to put together a paper meter tape. We will be using this in class the second week of school to help us with conducting investigations throughout the school year!

You child will receive their paper meter tape Monday the first week of school and have until the following Monday, August 27 to bring this back to school. Below is my meter tape that I made to keep in my science notebook.

Mine is on yellow paper, but your child can color it however they want to!Last year, I colored each group of 10 a different color so I could easily see each decimeter. 

You will want to cut the dotted line at the beginning of the 20, 40, 60 and 80 sections. It will be glued over the tens place of each number at the end of the previous strip.

Glue each section together, making sure to have the numbers in sequential order.

School Supply Lists

I hope everyone has been enjoying their summer so far! I know that several stores are starting to put out their Back to School items and some of you are wondering what will be needed for this upcoming school year! Below are the links for the 3rd and 4th Grade school supply lists for the 2018 - 2019 school year.

3rd Grade teachers would also love it if you are able to send a couple extra glue sticks, red pens and an extra box of crayons. These are supplies we tend to run a little low on through out the school year.

Skip the Summer Slide!

IT'S SUMMER!!! I hope everyone's summer is filled with lots of lounging, pigging out and family time. Of course, don't forget to practice your math skills every so often, as well. Skills that are not reinforced over the summer and often be forgotten. This is called the summer slide. While this is most often used for reading, the same is true for math.

The beginning of 4th grade will move quickly, just like it did in 3rd grade! At the end of this 3rd grade year, we looked ahead at some of the 4th grade skills that would be taught within the 1st cycle. Those skills are:

• Review of Place Value and Place Value Relationships with Whole Numbers
• Introducing Place Value and Place Value Relationships with Decimals
• Adding and Subtracting Decimals (with and without equal decimal values)
• Multiplying a 2 Digit Number by Another 2 Digit Number

Listed below are different websites, online games and practice pages that can be used over the summer to keep up those math skills you worked so hard on throughout the school year!

*Practice your multiplication skills and celebrate 4th of July with this patriotic multiplication worksheet from Education.com! These problems are written in standard algorithm. Snapshot 6-4-18

Dear Parents,

Reading Pledges were sent home in Tuesday folders this past week! Students who return the pledge will receive a treat. We get a shout out on the announcements when we all return it! Please keep the SUMMER READING LOG! Those reading logs can be turned in in the fall as a ticket to an ice cream party with the principals!

Thank you all for a great year! I have loved every minute of having your kids in class with me this year. Thank you for trusting me with your babies and letting me teach them. They are going to soar in 4^th grade because of all of their hard work, determination, and their support system at home.

 THIS WEEK IN MATH:

We will finish out the year with our STEP UP TO 4^TH GRADE Unit. We will continue to look at different multiplication models such as area (or box/window) model, lattice, partial product, and standard algorithm. Area (box/window) seems to be the favorite of the week, while lattice seems to be a bit more challenging.

 Some of the areas we will be focusing on this week are:

·         2 Digit by 2 Digit Multiplication

·         Multiple Step Word Problems Involving Multiplication And Division

MATH RESOURCES FOR PRACTICE

Khan Academy - 2 Digit by 2 Digit Multiplication – This video on 2 digit by 2 digit multiplication from Khan Academy is a good way to see how to multiply 2 digit by 2 digit numbers.

Math Playground - 2 Digit by 2 Digit Multiplication – Practice 2 digit by 2 digit multiplication on Math Playground using the standard algorithm method. You can also view the area model on our class blog page here.

Soft Schools - Learning Multiplication – Playing on Level 2 of the Learning Multiplication game will give students 2 digit by 2 digit multiplication problems. Level 1 would be a good review of 2 digit by 1 digit multiplication problems. Level 3 is a mixed practice that includes numbers through the hundreds place.

Education Galaxy – As students log into their accounts on Education Galaxy, they can choose the option to go up 1 level and work through 4^th grade materials. In the purple section titled “My Study Plan”, there are several different topics to practice. The TEKS accompany these skills.

IXL - Multiple Step Word Problems – Work through different multi-step word problems in IXL. Since we do not have a subscription, you are only able to work through a set amount of problems a day before it closes out. I can’t remember the exact number, but I want to say it’s around 10 or so. Still great practice!

THIS WEEK IN SCIENCE:

In science this week, we will finish our Unit on Organisms and Ecosystems by continuing to review for our last test of the year. This will be a cumulative test that covers everything we have learned this semester in science. Our year end test will include information from the following units:

●       Force, Motion, and Energy

●       Sun and Solar System

●       Earth and Its Resources

●       Organisms and Ecosystems

Once we finish our last science test of the year, we will quickly look at how liquids are turned into solids for food sources. Examples of this are butter, margarine and ice cream. Students will be researching how liquids are turned to solids by using different videos and websites. A link with the different videos and websites they will be using is here.
