Birds

This week in science we talked about birds. On Monday, we watched the bird part of our BrainPOP on classifying animals. After our BrainPOP, we make a list of characteristic birds have and some that birds do not have.

Tuesday, the kids chose either an owl, duckling or chick to decorate either with crayons and colored pencils or with feathers.

After they decorated their different birds, the kids who had owls and chicks made nests for their birds by gluing timothy hay onto a paper cut-out of a nest. While the duckling kids colored a mama duck for their ducklings to follow. Needless to say, our room was filthy ... but it was worth it! :)

Wednesday, the kids drew their favorite bird and that bird's habitat.
His eagle had a nest on top of some rocks.

Thursday, the kids wrote 3 facts about birds, then drew an example of a bird on a paper in their science journals.

Friday, the kids drew 3 pictures of birds and one picture of an animal that was not a bird in their science journals.

Mammals

Last week in science we talked about mammals. The week before, we talked about different kinds of animals and talked about their skin coverings, habitats, what they eat and compare them to one another. We started the week off by watching the mammal part of our BrainPOP on Animal Classification.

Next, we made a list of characteristics for mammals and non-mammals. Tuesday, the kids read and colored a mammal book. A different person pointed to different pages in out book as the class read.

Thursday, the kids drew pictures in their science journals showing 3 mammals and 1 non-mammal.

Animal Differences and Similarities

Last week in science we started our animal unit! I think it may be my second favorite science unit that we do! We pent all week talking about different animals, where they live, what their bodies look like and what they eat. Then, we compare them to each other and found that some of them are really similar and some of them are really different!

Wednesday, the kids drew pictures of an animal and we sorted them by skin coverings and habitats.

Thursday, the kids drew pictures of their favorite animals and the habitats that those animals live in.

Friday, the kids drew one land animal and one water animal in their habitats.
