Week of: November 27, 2017

Dear Parents,

Here is a snapshot of our learning this week in math and science.

THIS WEEK IN MATH:
In math this week we are continuing our study of multiplication and division and focusing on problem solving using multiplication facts to solve division problems. Students will use these multiplication and division skills to solve one and two step word problems.  We will be working on input output tables with multiplication and division relationships as well.
Here are some resources that were previously sent home in take home folders.  Hopefully the clickable links will prove to be easier to use.
Math Resources to Help at Home
Division Math Practice – In this drag racing game, your child can practice division facts while racing against the computer or other players.

Students in third grade must master their multiplication facts with automaticity.  This means they are to recall these facts quickly.  Each Tuesday, we have a two minute test over the facts we have studied for the previous week.  A note was sent home before the break to explain this.  Tomorrow’s timed multiplication test will be over 0s, 1s, and 2s through the twelfth multiple.
Some great websites to practice multiplication facts are:
www.thatquiz.org  - Under Integers, click Arithmetic.  Adjust length, level, and time as needed.  Click the box for multiplication to let your child practice their facts.
www.multiplication.com – Lots of free and entertaining games to practice multiplication facts.
http://educationgalaxy.com – Use the skills practice section for math to practice multiplication facts.

THIS WEEK IN SCIENCE:
In science this week, we are learning about mixtures and solutions.  We will also be reviewing states of matter as well as physical properties to describe matter.  Your child will be participating in lab investigations to help them learn this content during a hands on experience.
Science Resources to Help at Home
http://educationgalaxy.com – On the top right, have your child go up one level on the drop down menu.  Then go to My Study Plan and choose science.  Practice Properties of Matter and Mixtures & Solutions.
Ready Hub – Go to Flocabulary and watch the Mixtures and Compounds video that has been assigned.  This is above level, but your child is welcome to practice the questions and read and respond if they would like to further their understanding.
Discovery Education – There is a large supply of video, interactive learning, questions, and an interactive glossary for vocabulary that is always helpful for whatever we are learning in science.  All content in this resource is searchable.

Thank you so much for your dedication to helping your child learn.

Living Wax Calendar

Below is the Living Wax calendar that Mrs. Castle has edited. I know there were a few questions about due dates and what all was happening. So that I don't tell you the incorrect information and you can view and access the calendar, I have uploaded it and made it available to download.

Place Value

The beginning of this school year has FLOWN by! I haven't forgotten to upload photos, it's just taken me a while to get them edited! Here are some of the things your kiddos have been working on the first couple weeks of school ...

The first day of school, we took a place value pre-test. The kids had 10 questions at their desks, and 10 questions that they had to find around the room.

We practiced place value in lots of different ways, but one of the most fun was the dice game we played. The kids each got 3 dice and 1 note card that they folded into thirds. Then, they worked with their shoulder partners to make a place value board that went from the ones place the to the hundred thousands place. They rolled their dice, and used the 6 dice to make a number that was either the greatest or least out of those dice based on what I called out. They showed AWESOME teamwork skills!

Week 2, we started math stations! Thursday and Friday the kids switched to 4 different stations. Each of their stations was 20 minutes each.

At my table, we did a 5 question quick check, then played a coin and amount matching game. The kids looked at the amounts that were on the table, and matched the mixed coin cards that were in their hands to the amounts. If they were right, they got another one.

At another station, the kids split their time in half between computers and matching addition and subtraction sentences.

At a third station, the kids worked on an independent place value assessment. Since we've been practicing using our cubby boxes as offices, they put them up all the time.

We've gotta take some breaks! Blazer Fresh is my FAVORITE GoNoodle channel. You can sign up for a free GoNoodle account at home! Go {here} to check it out, or in the "Learning At Home" tab at the top of the page.

Keep practicing those place values up to the hundred thousands place and mixed money! Practice makes perfect! Math Playground has some games that are sorted by grade and topic.

Here are a few money and place value games:

See ya next week for more math class work and stations!

Welcome to 3rd Grade!

Welcome to your new 3rd Grade Classroom! I am so excited to have each of you in my Math and Science room this year! We have some pretty cool stuff planned in our grade level and I would love to share it with all of you!

Our class not only has a blog page, but a few other classroom communication tools that I will utilize throughout the school year. You can find these in our classroom flip book that will be sent home the first week of school.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask! It's going to be a great year!

Earth Day Trash Art Project!

To celebrate Earth Day this year, I am inviting you to make some trash art with your kiddo(s) at home! Last year, we had some really creative projects come through our kinder classroom!

All you have to do is gather some items that you would normally throw away and create something with them. It could be an animal, a tool, a storage container of some kind, whatever you want!

Here are some examples of what you could do!

You do not have to do a project if you don't want to. If you do, please send them to school during Earth Week, April 17-21, so we can display them on the tables in the hallway. I hope to see yours!
