Week of: September 10, 2018
Good evening!
We are getting ready to start Science Fair! We’re so excited to be doing this in 3rd grade this year! Students will be completing part of this in class over the course of 5 days. Students will need to come up with a testable question, and be prepared to begin researching, form a hypothesis, and write their procedure. Once we have completed our graded in-class work, those who wish to continue their Science Fair project will continue at home until our mid-October due date. More information will be sent out about this in the upcoming week.
We also have MEET THE TEACHER this Thursday, September 13 in the school library! We hope to see everyone there! 😊 Please see our upcoming dates and assignments for the next couple of weeks.

 THIS WEEK IN MATH:

We will begin our last lesson in Unit 1 over money. This set of money lesson will only last this week. Our main focus will be on mixed money, using coins and bills to determine amounts. We will also be reviewing the proper way to write money, complete with a dollar sign at the front of the number, and a decimal separating the whole numbers from the fractional numbers.
Some of the areas we will be focusing on this week are:
·         Count a collection of bills and coins
·         Show an amount of money using mixed bills and coins
·         Read and write money amounts

We will be representing these skills in our math notebooks. Math notebooks can go home at any time for extra practice and studying! Please be sure to return math notebooks to school each day so that we may continue to take notes and work through examples in them.

MATH RESOURCES FOR PRACTICE

GoNoodle - Getcha Money Right Video – We will be dancing to this Blazer Fresh video on GoNoodle throughout the week as part of our Brain Breaks in math! Continue to learning and dancing at home! GoNoodle is free to use and there are a plethora of videos for all content areas, and growth mindset!
Khan Academy - Counting American Coins – View the video that discusses American Coins. Then, practice counting and recording money with questions in words form, as well as picture form.
ABCya - Learn to Count Money – Choose a level from counting coins that amount to less than a dollar, to coins and bills up to $100. Match the money to the amount listed. The goal is to earn fish to win the game!
FREE APP: Amazing Coin – There are 3 different games that the free version of in this app rotates through. The most useful game has you “pay for items” by matching the amounts listed with the proper coins in order to “buy food”.
Counting Coins – Watch the BrainPOPJr video on counting coins! Play the game when you are finished where you can match mixed coins with different priced objects.
These links can be accessed on our Place Value and Money Symbaloo here. This is the last lesson in this unit, but as I come across other resources, they will be added to our Symbaloo. Let me know if you find a great resource that your child loves to use at home and we can add it to our Symbaloo!

THIS WEEK IN SCIENCE:
We will continue looking at measuring within the metric system. We will finish up measuring volume and capacity of liquids this week with our soda can volume investigation. We will then move on to measuring the mass of objects using balance scales. We will also be preparing for our Science Fair lessons that will take place the following week. Students will be required to come up with a topic and testable question BEFORE we begin our Science Fair lessons. These will be due, along with a parent signature, by Thursday, September 13 for teacher approval. More information about Science Fair will be sent home this upcoming week.
Some of the areas we will be focusing on this week are:
How to make measurements with appropriate units
Standard measurement units in the metric system
        How to measure liquids accurately

SCIENCE RESOURCES FOR PRACTICE
Khan Academy - Volume – View video that discusses volume, then practice with questions that estimate volume! You can also practice different word problems with volume. *When accessing from Symbaloo, click the navy Learner’s, start here button, Math By Grade – 3rd, measurement and data, and then choose volume.
Discovery Education - Meter Video – Students will log into their Discovery Education accounts using Ready Hub. This video goes through what a meter is, what we may measure with a meter, and what segments a meter is broken down into.
BrainPOPJr - Milliliters and Liters – Watch the BrainPOPJr video on centimeters, Meters and Kilometers. You can also play a game that lets you drag and drop items that are less than or greater than a meter. You can also view the BrainPOPJr videos and play the games for Centimeters, Meters, Kilometers and Grams and Kilograms
BrainPOP - Metric Units – Watch the BrainPOP video on Metric Units and play the game where you are able to watch a quick video and put events from the metric time line in order.

These links can be accessed on our Scientists Measure Symbaloo here. As we continue through the unit, more links will be added.
