Soda Can Investigation Conclusions

Today we worked on our conclusions for our Soda Can Investigations. We spent about 20 minutes of class time looking at each area that needs to be included in our conclusion on the left side of our science notebooks, next to our data page. Here are the areas we looked at in class today, as well as my examples as we wrote in science notebooks.

Remember, your completed Soda Can Investigation (your completed data sheet and completed conclusion) are due Friday for a grade! Your conclusion needs to be one paragraph. See my finished example at the bottom of the page.

Soda Can Volume Investigation Conclusion

There are 5 different areas we need to make sure and address when we are writing our science investigation conclusions.

Question being investigated.
·       We want to know if the amount of soda in a can is what is listed on the label.
Hypothesis
·       I think that the amount of soda we get in a can is less than 355mL, which is what is listed on the label. I think this because I know there is space inside of a can for air.
Evidence found: observations made and the data collected
·       During our investigation, we found that the water we used to fill up the can was more than 355 mL. In fact, it was almost 400 mL!
Reasoning: the science that explains how the evidence helps answer the question
·       Discovering that the capacity of the can was almost 400mL told us that the amount listed on the can is the volume. 355mL is the volume because the can is not all of the way full when you open it.
Claim made: answers the question and is supported by the evidence and reasoning
·       We found out that the amount of soda inside of the can was the same amount that was listed on the label.

Remember, your conclusion needs to be written in paragraph form, in complete sentences. Here is what my conclusion looks like when I put all of my sentences together.

We want to know if the amount of soda in a can is what is listed on the label. I think that the amount of soda we get in a can is less than 355mL, which is what is listed on the label. I think this because I know there is space inside of a can for air. During our investigation, we found that the water we used to fill up the can was more than 355 mL. In fact, it was almost 400 mL! Discovering that the capacity of the can was almost 400mL told us that the amount listed on the can is the volume. 355mL is the volume because the can is not all of the way full when you open it. We found out that the amount of soda inside of the can was the same amount that was listed on the label.
